Characteristics of collapsible red soil in Northeast Thailand

We analyzed the characteristics of red soils that are often considered collapsible soils. In this study, we examined depositional environment and lithologic characteristics, stratigraphy, conducted mechanical sieve, X-ray fluorescence, X-Ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, fluorescence analyses optically stimulated luminescence dating. The samples were collected from gravel pits to examine reveal details their processes. abrupt particle size change in overlying soil formed a pseudo-disconformity with subjacent bed. was unstratified granule gravels scattered throughout layer. consisted mostly sand (~70%), minor silt clay contents (~30%); thus, classified as silty sand. contained large amount silicon, high percentage quartz. V-shaped micro textures represented percussion abrasion mechanisms on surface individual grains, suggesting transport by fluvial deposition occurred during Late Pleistocene, absence desert suggested different conditions than those associated aeolian deposition. Consequently, lithology, physical chemical properties, chronology consistent termite mounding, which plays an important role upward transportation small particles causes sediments descend.
